Spring is in the air, so what better way to start the season than with a band called Spring? (Весна / Vesna = Spring). Why they said it twice I’m not sure, except that there’s another Russian group called Vesna, so maybe it was to avoid confusion? I won’t be featuring the other Vesna since they’re just a typical girl-group, which has been been done to death at this point I’d say.
Based in St. Petersburg, Vesna Vesna are: Tatiana Antoshina voice and lyrics; Alex Kuptsov guitar & synthesizer; Alex Elohin drums; Boris Ilinov bass. As best I can tell the group formed around 2018, but unfortunately they appear to have broken up as of December 2022 according to their VK channel. I hope that’s not permanent because I really like their sound. That’s about all I’ve been able to dig up, which is typical of this genre where artists don’t like to make a big fuss about themselves.
There’s an interview in Russian here. Nothing out of the ordinary, and as usual they didn’t ask where the group got its name (which drives me to distraction). As you’d expect, Vesna Vesna is on YouTube, VK and Bandcamp.
Aside from the mix itself and the occasional bit of EQ, I don’t like to add anything to the music that isn’t already there, but the opening monologue, which I stole from an old Star Trek episode, fit so well I couldn’t resist. This program is a continuation of the space theme that began in the last program anyway, and it even has a song called ‘Venus’ and another one called ‘Sea of Comets,’ so I think I can get away with it. The music is definitely in the same style as Life on Venus.
I’ll probably do one more program on the shoegaze theme before I move on to something different. Maybe a mix of songs from groups I’ve already featured as there’s still plenty of great material I couldn’t include for reasons of space and time.
Dunno if I like it, ebear; didn't know if such a thing even exists but thought it might. So I'll go look for gopnik songs in "Mad Russians". If it's like American gangsta hip hop then I won't listen to much, heh.
For your next genre, I respectfully suggest Gopnik rock, if such a thing exists (and I think it must). But I will go now and listen to your last shoegaze offering, if only because the chick singer is such an angel, ha ha!
