Dunno if I like it, ebear; didn't know if such a thing even exists but thought it might. So I'll go look for gopnik songs in "Mad Russians". If it's like American gangsta hip hop then I won't listen to much, heh.
Russia has it's own version of 'gangsta' but I don't play any of that because it's just as lame as the western stuff. The Hard Bass scene is more of a parody of 'gangsta.' Like this for instance:
For your next genre, I respectfully suggest Gopnik rock, if such a thing exists (and I think it must). But I will go now and listen to your last shoegaze offering, if only because the chick singer is such an angel, ha ha!
I actually found another really good shoegaze act that I just have to feature, they are so awesome! I already did a bit of the gopnik stuff, AKA Hard Bass (pronounced like the fish, not the guitar). Go back to my 'dlb - where's the girl?' post and my 'Mad Russians" post and you'll find some there. If you like that kind of stuff and can't wait for more, I recommend these YouTube channels:
I like all this self parodying. Seems to me it started in the punk movement and has continued on sporadically there. Australia has a penchant for it. Early rap had a touch of it too, tho not as pronounced as punk. I was never sure if I was laughing w/ them or solo at them. I think white liberals never laugh at them no matter how ridiculous the message or delivery.
Your video links led me to discover Leningrad the band. Tons of videos and songs and personnel changes in the band. Every video I saw was humorous w/ extremely in high production values and the music kind of orchestrated disco funk. Live I saw they were more ska punk. Hugely entertaining tho not exactly what I'd want to listen to at home alone.
Ah yes.... Leningrad. Those guys have been at it for a while now and have some really great videos. They're actually on my list to present, but I'm not sure whether to just put up some of their videos or try and do a music set. It's not the kind of music I want to listen to at home or in the truck, but I'd definitely go and see them whenever I could. I'd probably be a fan if I lived in Russia. Maybe even wear a Leningrad t-shirt!
The opposite of a synth duo, a huge band which would make for very expensive tours. The elaborate and expensive videos seem to be their main thing. They do it better than anybody I've seen.
There're a few metal genres that attempt hi-production videos. Both symphonic and power metal are suited for the mini movie treatment. Black and gothic metal for mini horror shows. None of them have any sense of humor which seems to be Leningrad's staple. None of them seem to have L's budget to work with. Is some oligarch in their corner?
Agreed about the music. Ska punk not my thing either.
"None of them seem to have L's budget to work with. Is some oligarch in their corner?"
I've wondered about that myself. Those videos aren't cheap to produce and I doubt their public performances are paying for it. Is there any revenue from YouTube I wonder, or is that sanctioned like everything else?

Self-parody is the main element, something sadly lacking in western hip-hop and rap.
